Buddhist Uposatha Days


Uposatha are special Buddhist holy days that occur four times each lunar month, marking the new moon, full moon, and quarter moon phases. These are times for intensified spiritual practice and moral observance.


The Four Uposatha Days Each Month


- New Moon Day

- First Quarter Moon

- Full Moon Day (most important)

- Third Quarter Moon



Traditional Practices



For Lay Practitioners


Eight Precepts taken for 24 hours:


1. Refrain from killing living beings

2. Refrain from taking what is not given

3. Refrain from sexual activity complete celibacy

4. Refrain from false speech

5. Refrain from intoxicants

6. Refrain from eating after midday

7. Refrain from entertainment, beautification, and luxurious beds

8. Refrain from handling money


Recommended Activities


- Visit the temple for group meditation and dhamma talks

- Extended meditation practice - vipassana or samatha

- Study Buddhist texts (Tripitaka) and reflect on teachings

- Dana (giving) - offer food, flowers, or donations to monks

- Chanting recite Buddhist sutras or mantras

- Mindful reflection on the Four Noble Truths and Noble Eightfold Path



Modern Practice Adaptations



If You Can't Visit a Temple

- Create a quiet space at home for meditation

- Follow the eight precepts as closely as possible

- Read dhamma texts or listen to dhamma talks online

- Practice loving-kindness meditation

- Engage in charitable activities


Simplified Approach

- Commit to longer meditation sessions

- Eat only vegetarian food

- Avoid entertainment and focus on spiritual activities

- Practice mindful speech and actions

- Reflect on Buddhist teachings
