The Sacred History of Luang Por Pha Sai

The original Luang Por Pha Sai is a magnificent bronze Buddha image with a solid gold head that dates back centuries. According to historical records, it was one of three Buddha images commissioned by the daughters of a Lan Xiang king in Laos.

In 1778, during a Siamese invasion, these three sacred images were taken from Laos. While being transported across the Mekong River, one of the images (Phra Suk) was lost to the river during a violent storm - an event seen as divine intervention. The second image (Pha Serm) was taken to Bangkok, while Luang Por Pha Sai found its home at Wat Pho Chai in Nong Khai, where it has remained as the city's most sacred Buddha image.

The people of Nong Khai deeply revere Luang Por Phaa Sai, and during the annual Songkran Festival, the image is paraded around town for devotees to pay homage and pour water as a blessing.

Miraculous Protection

Many miracles are attributed to Luang Por Pha Sai. Local stories tell of a skeptic who challenged the Buddha image to cause thunder - shortly after, thunder was heard. The statue is believed to protect devotees from suffering and bring prosperity, good health, and merit.
