Instruments

The most iconic Lao musical instrument is the khene, a bamboo mouth organ with two rows of bamboo pipes that produces a unique harmonic sound. Other traditional instruments include:

  • Saw sam sai: A three-stringed fiddle played with a bow

  • Phin: A lute-like instrument with two or four strings

  • Khong wong: A circular arrangement of small gongs

  • Lanat: A wooden xylophone similar to the Thai ranat

  • Drum ensembles: Various sizes of drums used in ceremonial music

Musical Styles

Lao traditional music encompasses several distinctive styles:

  1. Lam: A form of singing accompanied by khene, often featuring improvised verses and call-and-response patterns

  2. Mor lam: A popular folk performance art combining music, dance and storytelling

  3. Piphat: Ceremonial ensemble music played at important religious events

  4. Court music: Refined compositions historically performed for Lao royalty

  5. Folk songs: Simple melodies that accompany daily activities and seasonal celebrations

Cultural Significance

Traditional Lao music serves as more than entertainment—it preserves oral history, reinforces community bonds, and accompanies important life events. Many compositions honor Buddhist traditions or tell stories of Lao mythology and history.

Modern efforts to preserve traditional Lao music include cultural centers, music schools, and festivals that celebrate this rich heritage while introducing it to new generations. The distinctive sounds of traditional Lao instruments continue to influence contemporary music both within Laos and internationally.
