History of the Event

The Lao New Year Parade with Alms-Round represents the culmination of Pii Mai Lao (Lao New Year) festivities, blending religious devotion with cultural celebration. This tradition evolved from ancient Southeast Asian water festivals marking the solar new year and agricultural cycles. In Laos, these celebrations were integrated with Buddhist practices when the religion spread throughout the region. The parade element developed as communities sought to publicly honor Buddha images, monks, and cultural heritage during this auspicious time. This combined celebration represents the harmonious relationship between Lao cultural identity and Buddhist spirituality, showcasing how religious practice becomes beautifully interwoven with cultural expression.
