About the Event
The Lao New Year Alms-Round features monks walking in procession or alms bowl arranged on a table while community members offer food, necessities, and special New Year items. This ceremony is part of a larger celebration that includes several traditional rituals: water purification ceremonies (where Buddha images are gently bathed), sand stupa building, baci ceremonies (string-tying rituals for good fortune), traditional music and dance performances, and respectful water sprinkling among community members symbolizing the washing away of past misfortunes. The temple becomes vibrant with traditional Lao decorations, food, music, and cultural displays, creating a joyful atmosphere that honors both spiritual traditions and cultural heritage.
Requirements
- Arrive early (09:00 AM recommended) as this is typically the most attended ceremony of the year
- Dress in traditional Lao clothing if possible, or modest attire with shoulders and knees covered
- Bring offerings for monks: food, beverages, candles, incense, flowers, and new robes are traditional
- Women should place offerings in the monks' bowls without direct physical contact
- Prepare to participate in water ceremonies by bringing small bowls for water pouring
- Expect to get at least slightly wet during traditional water blessings
- Bring extra clothes if planning to fully participate in water festivities
- Elders are honored first during all ceremonies; show special respect to community elders
- Participate in the building of sand stupas if this activity is included
This celebration welcomes all community members and visitors interested in experiencing the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of Laos. The New Year ceremonies create a powerful connection between generations and offer a meaningful way to begin the new annual cycle with spiritual merit and community bonds.
History of the Event
Lao New Year (Pii Mai Lao or Songkran) is the most important cultural and religious festival in Laos, traditionally celebrated in mid-April to mark the end of the dry season and beginning of the agricultural cycle. This three-day celebration has deep Buddhist roots dating back centuries. The New Year alms-giving ceremony (Tak Bat) during this period holds special significance, as merit made during the transition between years is believed to be especially powerful. This practice connects to the Buddha's teachings on generosity (dana) as a foundation for spiritual development and creates auspicious beginnings for the coming year.
