We shared a special story with the children during our Sunday school yesterday. The Buddha taught about building an "island" inside ourselves that stays strong even when life gets difficult. Today I want to share this same idea with our teen and adult community in simple terms.
The Teaching
In the Dhammapada verse 25, the Buddha said we should use mindfulness, discipline, and awareness to create an inner refuge that no problems can wash away. This is like having a safe place inside yourself that always remains calm.
Building Your Island When Life Gets Hard
Start With Awareness
Our inner island begins when we pay attention to the present moment. In our busy world full of phones, work, and constant noise, simply noticing your breathing can be powerful. This is not about escaping your problems but seeing them more clearly.
Simple Practice: Before checking your phone each morning, sit quietly for 5 minutes and just notice your breath and how your body feels.
Understand Your Feelings
When we can recognize our emotions without getting carried away by them, we become stronger. Learning to say "I notice I am feeling angry" instead of "I AM angry" makes a big difference.
Simple Practice: When strong feelings come up, try naming them: "This is worry" or "This is frustration." Notice how the feeling exists in your body.
Know What Matters Most
At the center of your island are the things you truly value. In a world that often tells us success means having more things or achievements, remembering what really matters gives us direction.
Simple Practice: Ask yourself: "What would I want people to remember about me?" Use your answer as a guide for daily choices.
Staying Strong During Difficult Times
This teaching is helpful because it accepts that problems will come. The idea is not that we can avoid all difficulties but that we can find stability within them.
When facing challenges like:
Job stress or uncertainty
Problems in relationships
Health worries
Money concerns
World events that cause anxiety
Your inner island does not make these problems disappear, but it helps you respond thoughtfully instead of reacting without thinking.
We Are Stronger Together
While the Buddha taught us to develop our own inner strength, we also support each other. During our story time with the children yesterday, we saw how they helped each other understand these ideas through questions and discussion.
Starting Your Own Island Practice
If you want to develop your own unshakable island:
Begin with just 5 minutes of quiet sitting each day
Notice when you feel calm versus when you feel scattered
Create small daily moments to remember what matters most
Find friends who support your growth
Remember that this inner strength develops slowly with regular practice
Our Sunday teachings continue each week at the temple with programs for all ages. Whether you are new to Buddhist ideas or have practiced for years, you are welcome to join us.
May you find peace in your inner island, no matter what challenges come your way.
