When the Mind Creates the Story

Session reflection · 2026 Rain Retreat

A thought is not automatically the truth. Assumptions, emotions, and incomplete information can shape the way we see another person or situation.

Separate what happened, the story the mind added, and what remains unknown. The feeling is real, but the explanation may not yet be confirmed.

Pause. Become aware. Return. Give the situation room to reveal itself before deciding how to respond.

A simple practice

  1. Notice a moment when a thought or emotion arises.
  2. Pause before reacting and feel one natural breath.
  3. Ask: What do I actually know? What has my mind added? What is still unknown?
  4. Return to the present and decide whether action is needed.
