About the Event
During this day-long ceremony, monks recite all 13 chapters (kand) of the Vessantara Jataka in an uninterrupted sequence from early morning until late afternoon. The temple hall is elaborately decorated to represent scenes from the story, with special stations for each chapter. Community members move through the temple as the recitation progresses, making offerings specific to each chapter. The atmosphere alternates between solemn attention during dramatic moments and joyful celebration during auspicious parts of the tale. Musical interludes may accompany certain chapters, and special alms are offered to the reciting monks. The event concludes with a final blessing and merit-dedication ceremony, followed by community feasting and celebration of the completed recitation.

History of the Event
The Sermon of Phra Vessantara Jataka (Thet Maha Chat) is one of the most revered Buddhist ceremonies in Lao tradition, dating back centuries. This ceremony centers on the recitation of the Vessantara Jataka—the story of Buddha's penultimate life as Prince Vessantara, who perfected the virtue of generosity (dana parami) by giving away everything, including his kingdom, children, and wife. The complete recitation of this epic tale is believed to bring extraordinary merit to listeners. Tradition holds that hearing the complete Vessantara Jataka in a single day will result in rebirth in the time of Metteyya (the future Buddha) and offers protection and prosperity in this life. This ceremony has been preserved as a cornerstone of Lao Buddhist culture, connecting communities to their spiritual heritage.
